Saturday, December 19th…Calexico and Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta will perform at the 2nd Annual Merry X-MAS show at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles hosted by… the band X! Here’s the link for the fan ticket presale that begins Friday morning at 10am (the password is XMAS).
TOKYO IS DREAMING is “a rich and evocative tableau of life in the Japanese capital, set to a beguiling score by Calexico’s John Convertino. Taiwanese-born artist filmmaker Peter Chang’s portrait of the bustling metropolis offers a modern-day take on the City Symphonies that flourished in early 20th Century cinema with films such as ‘Man with a Movie Camera’. Like those earlier opuses, ‘Tokyo is Dreaming’ uses the camera to observe the beating heart(s) of urban life – work, travel, leisure but also alienation and homelessness – subtly drawing a map of the city in which quiet contemplation and frenetic activity overlap. The absence of dialogue, subtitles or voice-over narration encourages a total submersion in this life of the city – a bewildering and fascinating journey.” The official world premiere is on Saturday Sept 19 at the 2009 Berwick-Upon-Tweed Film & Media Festival in England. Here are links to the trailers… nice work John!
Dear friend to Calexico and “Carried To Dust” studio and live contributor, guitarist/singer Jairo Zavala, just released his first full-length album under the moniker DePedro. The album is also the first release of the National Geographic Music label…exciting!

Check it out, we think you’ll really like it.
July 2009 European Tour went really well. No one got lost or left behind, stuck at any airports or gas stations. We were all really happy with the shows especially the collaborations with Vinicio Capossela, Lambchop, Chris Cacavas and Depedro. Italy was the biggest surprise with some of the most amazing venues; 8th Century Benedictine Abbey of St Mary in Sesto al Reghena and the Villa Arconati in Milano were sublime and left us speechless.
Best bands on the festival circuit goes out to The Notwist at Cactus Festival in Brugges, Portugal The Man in Feldkirch Austria’s Poolbar and TV on the Radio at Benicassim Festival in Spain. Best food hands down goes to Milano’s Arconati. One of the most impressive festivals was Duisburg’s Traumzeit set in a 19th Century factory compound beautifully converted into some of the most stunning visual settings we’ve seen.
The shows in Finland and Poland were also really special since we rarely, if ever, get to play there. On that note, we are all really looking forward to playing Budhapest and Tel Aviv in August. Thanks to all the people who came out, said hello at the merchandise stand and took photos. Here’s to a glorious end of July and see you all in August.
Here is a link to a clip of the song “La Faccia della Terra” by Vinicio Capossela featuring Calexico. It was recorded and filmed in Tucson at Wavelab studio.
We have two shows together starting next week, Roma July 1 and Venaria July 2. We will be playing songs together for example “Polpo” and “La Faccia della Terra” throughout the evening and should be a lot of fun with lots of surprises.
The past ten months of touring the new album ‘Carried To Dust’ has been filled with a lot of great shows and experiences. We’ve met a lot of folks, seen a lot of friends and there’s been a bunch of requests for some live recordings of the new material to be sold at our concerts. So, with the help of the staff at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels we recorded one of the best shows of the tour. Thanks to Peter Verstraelen, our Belgian Promoter, Staf Verbeek who recorded the show, Craig Schumacher who mixed the recording, Jim Blackwood who mastered it, David Babbitt who did the art layout, and Adam Reach who coordinated the assembly. Thanks, too for all of the musicians, guests, crew, friends and families who helped with making all of this possible.
The artwork is comprised of photos from the band’s first tour of Santiago de Chile and South America which influenced some of the songs on ‘Carried To Dust.’ We would love to return to South America as we’ve yet to play Brazil, Peru, Uruguay… heck, we haven’t even played Mexico yet. Hopefully we’ll find some folks to help us find some festivals or shows there. This upcoming Summer Tour finds us playing some new cities and countries; Poland, Hungary, Luxembourg, Israel and Finland which we’ve only played once. Thanks again to all of you for contributing your support of the music and live shows.
